Recipe adapted from The Chunky Chef

  • Prep Time: 5 mins

  • Cooking Time: 20 mins

  • Total Time: 25 mins

  • Yield: 10 servings

  • Serving Size: About 1/4 cup

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

  • 2 lbs. ground beef

  • 1/4 green bell pepper, minced

  • 1/2 large yellow onion, minced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup

  • 2/3 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

DIRECTIONS
  • Heat butter and oil in large skillet over Med/Med-High heat.  Add beef and brown, breaking apart into crumbles as it cooks, about 5 minutes. Transfer to colander to drain.
  • Add onion and bell pepper to same skillet and cook 2-3 minutes, until soft. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds or so, until fragrant.

  • Add ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, salt, and black pepper. Stir well.

  • Cook over Med heat for 10-15 minutes, until mixture has thickened to your liking. Add the beef and stir well to combine and bring back up to temperature. Remove from heat and serve over toasted buns.
